A very private statement

At Karl Smyth Studio we’re very good at keeping your secrets. We’re so good at keep keeping them because we want to safeguard and preserve your privacy when you visit our site or communicate electronically with us.

This Privacy Policy explains what happens to any personal data you provide to us, or that we collect from you when you visit this website of ours. We’ll update this Policy from time to time so please feel free to review it whenever you want. It’s not a regular thing though, so don’t dash back tomorrow hoping for a terrific new read. Hell, we don’t even have a blog on the website if you’re after exciting new reading.

The information we collect

Our website is compliant with the General Data Protection Regulations (GDPR) adopted by the European Parliament in April 2018 and enforced by May 25th, 2018.

The website uses Google Analytics (please click here to read their Privacy Policy) to collect and process the following information about you:

  • Details of your visit to this website & the resources that you accessed; including, but not limited to: traffic data, location data, hardware and software being used and other communication data. None of this information allows us to identify you specifically as an individual.

We also use Hotjar (please click here to read their Privacy Policy) to track and record how site visitors interact with our site. This platform creates heat maps of the movements and interaction of site visitors and helps us to study and analyse our website’s user experience so it can be improved to make visiting our site a simpler and more pleasant experience.

Use of Cookies

We gather information about your computer for our services & to provide statistical information regarding the use of our website.

The information does not identify you personally, and is statistical data about visitors & their use of this site. This statistical data does not identify any personal details whatsoever. We don’t know if you are blonde, brunette or fiery red, or prefer coffee to tea.

We’re gathering information about the use of our website by using a cookie file. Again, this is nothing new, everyone’s at it. Cookies are downloaded to your computer’s hard drive automatically and they help us improve our website & the service that we provide to you. These funny little files essentially help make things better for you. Think of them as tiny binary fairies that flit between this website & your computer making everything better. A kind of digital tooth fairy.

All computers have the ability to decline cookies, which can be done by activating a setting on your browser to decline the cookies. But if you choose to decline cookies, you may be unable to access parts of our website and that would be a bit of a shame. Ultimately it’s your choice, so do whatever you fancy yourself.

Use of Your Information

Any information we collect & store directly relating to you is collected when you email us. This data is used to enable us to provide our services to you. We may use this information for the following purposes:

  • To provide you with information requested from us, relating to our products or services. Which is super handy.

  • To provide information on other products or services which we feel may be of interest to you. Which is super friendly.

  • To meet our contractual commitments to you. Which is just being super professional.

  • To notify you about any changes to our website, such as improvements or service/product changes, that may affect our service. Which is good to know, yeh?

Data that is provided to us is stored on secure servers, behind massive locked and bolted gates and if your name is not on the list you can’t see it. So don’t worry, you are safe hands. Should you be on that list and want to know what it says, just ask by emailing hello@karlsmyth.com

Sad, but true — the transmission of information via the internet is not completely secure — these screens have ears — therefore we cannot guarantee the security of data sent to us electronically. Even though we are really trustworthy, the internets are not. So, transmission of such data is therefore sent entirely at your own risk. Where we have given you (or where you have chosen) a password so that you can access certain parts of our site, you are responsible for keeping this password confidential. Like a pin number, or the address of that really sweet little place you don’t want ruined by all your friends going there all the time.

Third Party Links

You might find links to third party websites such as Vimeo, Twitter and Instagram on our website! Exciting times, we know. Now, these websites should have their own privacy policies which you should check, some people are not as nice as we are. It’s exactly because we are nice and some people are not that we have to say that we don’t accept any responsibility or liability for their policies whatsoever — why? We have no control over them. So if they are horrid in any way, it’s not our fault. Should you click on over to Twitter we also can’t be held responsible for the behaviour of the internet trolls there, who also tend to be horrible people.

Access To Information

For your own knowledge, the really rather smart European Data Protection Board ensures strict adherence to the fine principles that underpin it. Data must:

  • Be processed fairly and lawfully

  • Be obtained only for specified, lawful purposes

  • Be adequate, relevant and not excessive

  • Be accurate and updated regularly

  • Not be held for any longer than required

  • Be processed according to the rights of the data subjects

  • Be protected accordingly

  • Not be transferred outside the European Economic Area (EEA), unless the destination complies with adequate protection criteria

and the General Data Protection Regulations (GDPR) gives you:

  • the right of access to the information that we hold about you

  • the right of rectification/correction of the information that we hold about you

  • the right of erasure/to be forgotten

  • the right of restriction on processing

  • the right to object to processing

  • the rights of portability/wanting your data

If this is applicable, bear in mind, that the information we have about you can be as dull as just your email address (after you emailed us and asked what the colour is on your logo). Now, we’re all busy, so we’d rather you didn’t swamp our inbox with stacks of demands for access to this stuff. But, should you wish to receive details that we hold about you relating to the above please contact us using the contact details below.

If you’ve read this far, congratulations. No, seriously. We mean it. You are part of an elite, a rare few, a tiny group of people who have ventured to the metaphorical Antartica of legal statements. We hope you found it useful, illuminating even, and who knows, possibly mildly amusing in parts. We aim to please. Not often you can say any of that about legal copy. Now if you don’t mind, we’ve got to get back to doing what we do best — creating better brands and design.
